A brilliant pianist, singer and song writer of the jam band genre, Bruce was with the Grateful Dead from 1988 till 1995 when Jerry Garcia died. He has also recorded and released albums on his own since the late '80s with a variety of musicians producing music from the world of rock, jazz, blues, bluegrass and more. Here are a bunch of albums that I dig a lot.

This outstanding pianist had a very short troubled life but we are lucky that he left behind some great music for our ears which are going to last forever. He has played in trio and quartet formats but his solo efforts are the ones which are truly mind blowing.

You can read about him here and here.

Here are a few of his albums that I like the most. The first one is the one which he recorded at the age of 19.

Michel Petrucciani was a few weeks shy of his 19th birthday when he recorded this solo CD, which was not widely available until it was distributed by Rhino nearly a decade later. The pianist's program is an ambitious one, starting with a dark, richly-textured interpretation of Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue" (incorrectly attributed to John Coltrane, although he did help to make the piece famous with his recording of it). His dramatic take of "'Round Midnight" has an especially haunting quality to it. Wes Montgomery's "Bumpin' on the Sunset" is also in good hands, with Petrucciani delivering a masterful performance.
Pianist Keith Jarrett has carved out a unique place among comtemporary improvising musicians. After a brief mid-'60s stint with Art Blakey, Jarrett joined the enormously popular Charles Lloyd Quartet before being recruited by Miles Davis at the height of early fusion.
Initially, Jarrett's solo career continued in a similar electric vein, but he soon turned exclusively to acoustic instruments. His improvised solo piano concerts captured genius at work, and his Standards Trio redefined the genre. In between, he has performed classical works and his own folk-inspired music, and he has been an outspoken critic of the commercialization of jazz.

Facing You is one of the most important recordings in contemporary jazz for several reasons, aside from being beautifully conceived and executed by pianist Keith Jarrett. It is a hallmark recording of solo piano in any discipline, a signature piece in the early ECM label discography, a distinct departure from mainstream jazz, a breakthrough for Jarrett, and a studio prelude for his most famous solo project to follow, The Köln Concert. Often meditative, richly melodic, inventive, and introspective beyond compare, Jarrett expresses his soul in tailored tones that set standards for not only this kind of jazz, but music that would serve him and his fans in good stead onward. In this program of all originals, which sound spontaneously improvised with certain pretexts and motifs as springboards, the rhapsodic "Ritooria," 4/4 love/spirit song "Lalene," and song for family and life "My Lady; My Child" firmly establish Jarrett's heartfelt and thoughtful approach. "Vapallia" cements the thematic, seemingly effortless, lighter -- but never tame -- aesthetic. "Starbright" is an easy-paced two-step tune signifying fully Jarrett's personalized stance. Straddling a more jagged, angular, and free edge, the pianist evokes the influence of Paul Bley during "Semblence" (sic). But it is the opening selection, an extended ten-minute opus titled "In Front," that truly showcases Jarrett at his playful best -- a timeless, modal, direct, and bright delight. A remarkable effort that reveals more and more with each listen, this recording has stood the test of time, and is unquestionably a Top Three recording in Keith Jarrett's long and storied career.

Preliminaries to the concert were not auspicious. Jarrett arrived at the opera house late and hungry, and needed to eat a hasty meal before going on stage. When he was on, he found that the wrong piano had been delivered.But his performance was enthusiastically received, and the subsequent recording was acclaimed by the critics and an enormous commercial success. With sales of more than 3.5 million, it became the best-selling solo album in jazz history.[2]

The recording is in three parts, lasting 26 minutes, 34 minutes and 7 minutes, respectively. As the concert was originally programmed onLP, the second part was split into parts labeled "IIa" and "IIb". Part IIc actually is a 3rd part, the encore.

A notable aspect of this concert is Jarrett's ability to produce very extensive improvised material over a vamp of one or two chords for prolonged periods of time. For instance, in Part I, he spends almost 12 minutes vamping over the chords Am7 (A minor 7) to G major, sometimes in a slow, rubato feel, and other times in a bluesy, gospel rock feel. And for about the last 6 minutes of Part I, he vamps over an A major theme. Roughly the first 8 minutes of Part II A is a vamp over a D major groove with a repeated bass vamp in the left hand, and in Part II B, Jarrett improvises over an F# minor vamp for approximately the first 6 minutes.

The self-imposed quarantine on solo concerts over, Keith Jarrett returned to the improvisatory format that he virtually invented, mellower and more devotional than ever. Indeed, within the 38 minutes of solo improvisation captured at Paris's Salle Pleyel, Jarrett pulls further away from the old rousing (and thoroughly American) gospel, blues and folk roots of earlier concerts toward a more abstract concept. ”

I came across this gem a few months back while surfing the net for for some good blues guitar music. Man, It really knocked me off my feet! After their over whelming success in the sixties and at the peak of their careers, the foursome group split up went in their separate musical directions. Their musical growth in their own individual directions was evident in their live album '4 Way Street'. One could feel that they are drifting apart from their earlier music and sound as a band and going in their respective musical directions.
Though David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash got together very often to play together either in the studio or live, it was Neil Young who was always very aloof and continued with his successful career and a cult following. Neil always presented his audience with a wide range of music and soul searching lyrics throught his long musical journey. But the magic of CSNY could never happen in any of the band members music and sound. The fans always hoped that CSNY will re-unite and play together.
A finger picking style guitar virtuoso from Australia who will sure leave you spell bound with his style of playing. His acoustic music, though rooted in folk and prog-folk, draws inspirations from jazz, classical and other forms of music too. He is very much influenced by Chet Atkins, who hail him as the greatest contemporary finger picking guitarist.

You can read about him here. I am posting 3 of his great albums.

U2 was a band which burst into the scene in the eighties with the New Wave sound and captivated the rock music audience. Their music swept many off their feet and needless to say, I was one of the victims. They were one of the 10 favourite bands that I used to admire at that time. Although later on they failed to impress me as much as they did in the beginning of their career.

They released quite a few albums during the eighties and early nineties which quickly became very popular amongst their cult following - Boy, War, Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby. But this one concert album delivers the essence of their music to the world. This one album definitely says it all about their music and their sound! Bob Dylan and B. B. King joined the U2 on stage during this concert as special guests.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable album from start to finish and is regarded as one of the 100 best albums in the history of Rock music!
Here is a very talented singer and song writer from the late eighties. She was one of the major exponents during the revival of the folk music that started during that time. Her song writing talent is remarkable. She shared the stage with who's who of the music industry during Bob Dylan's 30th Anniversay concert shows in 1992.
This is one of the best albums of their career and of the Rock n' Roll genre. The album was conceived and recorded in France in the early seventies when The Stones were in exile from England for evading taxes.

After fifty years The Rolling Stones accessed the Exile tapes from their vault and invited their estranged buddy Mick Taylor to remaster this gem and added a bonus disc out of the outtakes of the sessions in the early seventies.

So, here it is - the 50th Anniversary remastered edition of Exile On Main Street with a bonus disc.
Albert Lee is one of many unsung heroes of the rock n' roll phenomenon of sixties. He is an expert guitarist, much appreciated by Eric Clapton, with whom he played as session musician for a few years. He had been the second guitarist in Clapton's landmark live album of the late seventies - Just One Night. Albert has also played with quite a few musicians as a session artist - with the likes of Joe Cocker, Emmylou Harris, Bill Wymn, Jimmy Page, etc.

He has recorded quite a few albums himself which are highly acclaimed by the critics and other musicians.
Railroad Earth is a roots and Americana-based jam band whose particular brand of new grass music is simply mind blowing!

Those of you who are like the Garcia-Grisman type of music will surely like this band. Their name was inspired by Jack Kerouac's short story "October in the Railroad Earth", by which the band also has a song. Railroad Earth's music combines elements of bluegrass, rock and roll, jazz, celtic and more, and the group is also known for its extensive live improvisation and lyrical songwriting within an acoustic base.
The six band members first came together in January 2001. Originally line-up was:

Todd Sheaffer - vocalist/guitarist/songwriter;
Tim Carbone- violinist/vocalist;
John Skehan - mandolinist;
Andy Goessling - multi-instrumentalist;
Carey Harmon - drummer/vocalist;
Dave Von Dollen - bassist.

Here is an extract from the web:

<< the group kicked off by rehearsing a handful of original songs, mostly written by Sheaffer, the former From Good Homes songwriter, just to get together, hang out and play some music. But after just three weeks of rehearsing, they decided to go into a local recording studio to track a five song demo. Recorded live with no overdubs except backing vocals, this untitled demo set Railroad Earth's career in motion. Within a week they had manager Brian Ross on board, who sent their demo out to several festival promoters...quickly landing them a slot at the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Festival. That appearance was the new band's tenth as Railroad Earth. The previous nine gigs had been little more than warm-ups at small North Jersey bars and Elks lodges.[1] In early April 2001, the band returned to the same local studio and tracked another five songs to complete an album. The Black Bear Sessions was released to the public in June 2001, one week before their appearance at Telluride. The album contains what are still some of the most popular songs in Railroad Earth's repertoire, including "Seven Story Mountain," "Head" and, of course, "Railroad Earth." Immediately following their appearance at Telluride, Sugar Hill Records approached the band and offered them a record deal.

In June 2002, Railroad Earth released its follow-up album on Sugar Hill entitled Bird In A House, featuring songs such as "Like A Buddha," "Mighty River," and the album's title track. Throughout that year Railroad Earth's touring schedule increased dramatically and their growing fanbase began to emerge as something tangible to promoters, radio stations and other media. They were garnering raves for their unique sound and exciting live shows and had become a staple act on the line-up of any Roots, Folk or jam-band festival. Their fans, who were now calling themselves "Hobos," began to grow quickly in size, and the venues were getting larger along with them.

In late March 2003, Dave Von Dollen was replaced by Atlanta-based bassist Johnny Grubb. The following year, the band released its third studio effort, The Good Life, featuring "Storms," Mourning Flies," and "Goat." The band continued to tour throughout the country, and its first live album, "Elko," was issued in late January 2006. They performed at the Austin City Limits Music Festival on September 15, 2007.

The band's fourth studio album, entitled Amen Corner, was released on June 10, 2008. The album features songs such as "Been Down This Road," "Hard Livin'," "Waggin' The Dog," and "Lovin' You."

On November 11, 2009, Grubb announced his departure from the band after Railroad Earth's New Year's Eve run of shows in Portland, OR. In February 2010, Andrew Altman of the Codetalkers and Blueground Undergrass was named as his successor.

The band's self-titled fifth album was released on Oct 12, 2010.[2] The album featured Andy Goessling, for the first time playing electric guitar, and new songs from Todd Sheaffer including "Jupiter and the 119" and " Too much information" plus a 11-minute instrumental, written by John Skehan, "Spring-Heeled Jack." SHJ is John Skehan's initials backwards. It is the longest studio track to date for the band.

The band was announced to perform the self-titled album in its entirity and video tape it to send to the fans. >>
This Tunisian is a virtuoso of the instrument Oud, playing it for more than 35 years now. His instrument and its music is very captivating and deeply meditative in nature. It really calms you down and takes you on a journey... a journey of self exploration in my case.

Apart from playing Arabian classical music, he has been playing a fusion of jazz and Arabian folk and classical music. He is regarded as an innovator of the instrument that he plays and has played with Dave Holland, John Surman, Jan Garbarek and Shaukat Hussein among others.
His dark magical notes of the instrument added to the awsome sound that the band was creating at that time. Maupin had led a solo career thereafter and recorded a few albums on his own, apart from playing as a session musician and sideman for a lot of other musicians of repute. Apart from Bass Clarinet, he played flutes, saxophones and piano too.

You can read about him in more details here.

For a complete discography of Bennie Maupin, visit wikipedia.

Here are a few of his solo albums:

Early Reflections

Get it in any of these links: SS or HF or FS

Moonscape

Get it here.

Slow Traffic To The Right

Get it here.

The Jewel In The Lotus

Get it here.

Visit this allmusic.com page to get details of the posted albums. Jack Rose was an outstanding guitarist who played 6 and 12 string finger style and steel guitars. His career was cut short by his untimely death at the age of 38 by a heart attack. During his career, which span over a few years only, he recorded a few albums which is all we have of his brilliant musicianship. He started off with a band named 'Pelt', and then moved on to a solo career.
Very good music for parties!

You can read about King Sunny Adé here:

http://www.gatewayofafrica.com/artists/biography/149.html

You can get the album here:

http://globalgroovers.blogspot.com/2010/11/king-sunny-ade-and-his-african-beats.html

Enjoy!rinteshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04738067389975753161noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21252725.post-2958477232042000872011-04-01T13:35:00.000+05:302012-05-26T18:12:55.076+05:30Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Watch

Came across this marvelous album on the net while surfing. I remember buying an LP record of this back in 1979 and it really blew my mind. I heard this again after so many years, and believe me it sounded as impressive as ever. This is surely a great album and one of the best 100 rock albums of that era. 'Circles', 'California' and Dylan's 'Mighty Quinn' are true gems.

This is a fantastic band playing essentially 'jam' music with a bit of salsa and jazz and a lot of bluegrass thrown here and there. Sure to make you get up on your feet and sway with their music. Bill Nershi's guitar work at times reminds me of Garcia. Read about them at:
